but at least I still had a voice
and the wherewithal
to get the party started

starting over

a once scorched earth
now covered in water
the flood gates
no longer operable

didn’t you once say
this place
would be uninhabitable
for anything without
roots or wings or gills

eventually even the plastic
bottles become
useful as bobbers
—artificial fish fishing for fish

the tree children

moon swaying over tidal waves
a dream inside a dream
trees planted in the sand
stretching for the clouds
children of the forest climbing
until they’re no longer seen

man-made machines pounding
on the ocean floor
shaking loose the tree children
sending them falling & tumbling
plunging into the ocean
evolving into something new
