underdog

in the land of the giants
you’d think the little people
have nary a chance
yet there they are
sharpening their swords
and licking their chops
for just one chance
to take over the world

not scared now

desert prince
someone once promised
you the world but failed
in their efforts
having ascended into the skies
like a bird released
from its cage
unexpectedly

and so you were left
with only an idea
how to possess the world
if only for a brief moment
the idea itself becoming
its own energy
like waves
reshaping the shoreline

patriots flying through space

it’s unrealistic to think
I could be flying through space
between today & my death
yet the calls keeping coming in
fundraisers & recruiters
wanting a piece of me
like I’m a tiny part of a complex picture
dreamers connecting dots
from my body to the moon’s south pole
—eventually onto mars

I’ve since blocked such callers
stopped answering
unrecognized numbers
believing there’s nothing unadmirable
about dying right here on earth

the uncommoner

she stood tall like a tree
and come spring
she was beginning to bud

pick a fruit any fruit
what would you like to be
when you grow up

apples or peaches or pears
or maybe something
entirely different
like chokeberries
or hazelnuts
something much bigger
like coconuts

she stood tall like a tree
and come spring
she climbed even higher
having come to know exactly
where she wanted to be

star wars on the planet earth

they say there is safety in numbers
an old adage likely apocryphal
this day & age

wherever people gather
there exists this potential
for mass devastation
whether by nature herself
or the acting out of malcontents

I suppose from the dawn of time
humans have been unable
to control themselves
whether it be the insatiable desire
to reach for the stars
or thirsting to destroy
that which we fail to comprehend
