new year’s eve

wood burning stove
boastful & bright
a child & her bear toasty warm
asleep in the nursery
newly minted wishes
playing out in dreamland
the clock in hallway
completing the countdown
chiming twelve times

under your watch

believe in the here & now
and celebrate with me
all that is good under the sun

you may not know me
but I am your long lost brother
back from the dead
to proclaim the good news

believe in yourself
and celebrate with friends
all that is good under the stars

if you are blue
may it be purposeful
a temporary state of mind
giving way to awareness

believe in this world & beyond
eyes witnessing & celebrating
all that is good under your watch

a celebration of life

there is sadness in the streets
and anguish in the hearts of strangers

they gather on your behalf
knowing full well
it may be too little and too late

some say it was a midnight march
disguised as a parade
while others felt compelled to participate
simply by way of gut feeling

you could see it in their eyes
those watching silently by the wayside
an unmistakable colorlessness
falling upon the night

in the meantime little ones
searched for little pieces of candy
only to find diamond-shaped tears
glistening from the moonshine
