For whatever reason
they shot the messenger
[yet again]
this time his dying words
proclaiming
he wasn’t the real deal
but merely a patsy

it was a case of corruption or there was no defense
judge sat on bench eating dutch
apple pie and french vanilla ice cream
you’ve got to be kidding me the finger-
pointing prosecutor shouted from
behind darkly stained wooden rails
though jurors would never forget his words
they quickly struck them from the record
and watched aghast as hooded bailers
swiftly and briskly escorted the bastard out
tips of his toes barely touching floor
judge promptly hammers his desk trice
and orders up another slice of pie
garbling specific instructions
how the prosecution may come to a rest

when too many are thrown on the street
and the police have sanctioned bullets
and the judges have their natural-born faults
and some of the locally elected are faithful
and some of them are corrupt
and the higher up you go
from city to county
from county to state
from state to region to super region
the higher you climb the greater the ratio
between the just and unjust
between good and evil
and there’s no telling who is winning
because this kind of winning is artificial
artificial like misguided dreams
and make-believe handguns

just what the world needs
there are too many bad guys
running around.
they’re everywhere
and they make everyone nervous.
these bad guys either carry guns
or they have access to them
or they have whole armies
at their disposal.
there are too many bad guys
running around.
they go to school
or work for the private sector
or the public sector
or no sector at all.
the bad guys either work alone
or become organized as gangs:
some considered illegal
and some considered legitimate
depending upon your perspective.
there are too many bad guys
running around and can be found
anywhere on the planet.
just pick a spot.
they are on television
and some of them provide the news
about the bad guys in waterloo
or shanghai or timbuktu.
there are too many bad guys
running around and they aren’t
going away anytime soon.

it’s always been that way
nothing about the past
is fair
and the future
will always be flawed
when you sit down
and wonder if things are moving
in the right direction
something hits you in the face
reminding you
the system always operates
with vital parts missing
