the road to empire

lies & deceit
were coded into our DNA
regardless of race or religion
or location on this planet

armies are built
in such ways
the manipulation of ordinary men
for the good of the order
for the safety of a people

repetition is but an iteration
of the entire repertoire
a treasure chest of ammunition
a bag full of tricks
a secret weapon behind the curtain

the last mile
is the bloodiest
a necessary evil if you will
the final confrontation ushering in
an empire of the third kind

practicing the art of deception

I was going incognito at the drugstore
picking up a few necessities
and a prescription for my neighbor Jimmy

I pretended my head wasn’t spinning
as I breezed past the pain killers
thinking what I got back home
is better than anything over the counter

that’s about the time I spotted her
at least fifteen years younger than me
[and three years removed from memory]
two aisles over browsing bandages

I lowered my cap and headed for the door
reminding myself on the short walk home
how my eyes have been deceiving me

high road

they closed the high road
for reformation
or so says the orange sign
attached to the electric fence
blocking the entrance
to the mountain road

it’s no wonder the locals say
the entire system
has suffered from misuse by
political scientists
and secret police
for some hundred years

once the lights sail past
the stratosphere
the high road will reopen
and pilgrims camping
at the base will resume
their arduous journey
