on may day

you open the front door
first thing in the morning
sticking your head out
and looking around
but there is nothing to find
no newspaper
no milk bottles
no basket of goodies left by
the children next door

after shutting the door
and retreating back into your den
you wonder whatever
happened to yesterday
when everything seemed
so perfectly normal
all the while knowing
deep in your heart
that was never the case

taking it with you

so I was thinking
once I’m gone
what would be my next
opportunistic move
and better yet
would I be up for it

what I’ve amassed
has mostly
resided in my mind
so to some degree
I’ll be taking
all that wealth with me

there is nothing
that will be left behind
possessionless
& penniless
my presence a vapor
left to chance

nothing to worry about

where do you suppose they go
all the good ones
is there a special place in time
nobody’s told us about

see here
I didn’t mean nothing by it
the candle went out
all on its own
and when I tried to bring it back to life
with a wink & a snap
well that was it
nothing doing

we talked for hours about it in the dark

every night the lights go out
and every morning
you wake up a new woman
somehow slightly different
like a daffodil
looking brighter
unconcerned about the law
of diminishing returns
as if there’s nothing to worry about
