february eve

one twelfth of the year
seemingly gone in a heartbeat
frozen in time
in the northern hemisphere
literally & figuratively

good news on the horizon
or so I would like to think—
a cloudy groundhog morning
a bright red valentine’s day
a national holiday soon to arrive
one of these mondays

but what of the prior
thirty-one days
locked inside a capsule nobody
wants to open
tossed without much thought
perhaps into the sea
like a message in a bottle
or buried beneath the sand
twenty-eight paces from an oasis
like some half-hearted promise

it’s never too late

it’s early
it’s only twenty twenty-one
and we’re just getting started

some say
they know exactly what’s going on
selling their shit
for a buck ninety-nine

rich & famous
or infamous and rich
or simply rich & unknown
[wouldn’t that be the way to go]

if only it were possible
to constantly remain poor
privy to granular details
and praying to the lord
fully aware what happens here
will never go away

some say
they don’t know jack anymore
dumping their shit
to any open bid
saying to themselves
it’s never too late
to lighten your load

fifteenth of january

the world aches
is in so much pain
perhaps from all the dancing
party-going and binges
designed to make all things
temporarily forgotten

tiny islands go up in smoke
making trees weep
and birds migrate aimlessly

there are arrows flying in the sky
unfortunately not the kind
penetrating a young man’s heart
forever changed to love

it seems to be neither tears
nor laughter that remains
but unforgettable impressions
discovered at most unexpected times
