facing the edge

I pull to the side of the road
mainly out of curiosity

how am I to move
the injured marmot
to the side of the road

I don’t get out of the car
instead I look up at the sky
its eyes burning like death

I look away
as if losing a staring contest
with the sun

a vehicle drives by
and then another and another
a whole host of them
like well-equipped refugees

I take my cue from the marmot
[which has seemed to move on]
and proceed
against the grain

changing plans on the fly

what else is there to talk about
now that the storms have passed

I was told it would go down like this
first the great divide & then the fall

in my mind the great resignation
was more like a melancholy separation
especially when compared to the present

I’m done waiting or moving in lines
for some handout I could do without

there are plenty of other ways to escape
open your mind & I’ll show you

angels of mercy

birds of all nations storm
war-torn suburbia
switchblades and derringers
concealed under wing
blanketing rooftops and lining live wires
waiting patiently for night to fall

predawn fog smothers the moon
and silences the stars
cloaking angels of mercy
and their effortless wings
zeroing in on and sweeping away
newly orphaned refugees
