depending upon the moon

lost in the chase
that damn rat race
or whatever it is you want
to call it
going about things
wearing a dumb smirk
or a wry smile
not giving a damn about
how big is the ocean

you always believed
it’s best to live & die
near water
a little smarter
millimeters along the way
separating the noise
from the substance
often disguised as killer waves
or slow-motion currents

sounds of the earth & of the wind

the lightning abandoned the night
giving way to ashes falling like snow
white covering a fading darkness
like a shadow losing its life

there is no memory of yesterday
only the clarity of today
of tomato bisque & baked cod
served in the center free of charge

lines kept getting longer
in this ever complicated nation
interconnected with the underground
& all things afloat or suspended

lifted from grief & whisked away
consciousness evolved
into a perennial sunflower
its seeds grounded in the multiverse

pulling the trigger

I’m not sure if I hear anything or not
lone sirens in the distance
somewhere a baby’s cry
a happy sparrow in the tina crab
I turn to look & there is nothing left

I’ve been down this road before
taking a right turn at the tee
plucking invisible clues along the way
a certain sound or maybe silence
triggering all sorts of memories
