artificial visitations

sadness used to show up
unannounced and we’d sit up
until sunrise drinking
whatever was left in the house

I kept telling myself the next time
he appeared out of nowhere
I wouldn’t let him in
but of course that didn’t happen
and he continued to pretend
to be my friend

I told him I was thinking about buying
a brand new puppy
a black one I said
so I could learn how to keep him at bay
and teach him to protect me from
monsters like him

  1. oh love this – the personification of sadness in the first stanza is stellar – really like the arc to the last lines – very nice – K

  2. Oh, this is the first time I’ve seen sadness painted this way — a destructive friend. Nice!

I have known this friend, Sadness, for years. Now another friend has written about it.
    So well!

  5. Very well written. I know this ‘friend’ too.

  6. Wonderful. I love this. You will create a more fierce monster who is dark like him, win at his game, leave you alone as you find your light. That’s where I continued this between the lines.

  9. As they say, misery loves company … sometimes we dwell on commiserating and self-pity. A puppy would surely chase the blues away. Well written and great personification of sadness. 🙂

A wonderful write many will connect to Loneliness Loss grief n such can be magnets to the strangers who call themselves friends The takers of the giving is such a hard punch when realisation of this hits you the sadness can often be like the weight of grief
