artificial visitations
sadness used to show up
unannounced and we’d sit up
until sunrise drinking
whatever was left in the house
I kept telling myself the next time
he appeared out of nowhere
I wouldn’t let him in
but of course that didn’t happen
and he continued to pretend
to be my friend
I told him I was thinking about buying
a brand new puppy
a black one I said
so I could learn how to keep him at bay
and teach him to protect me from
monsters like him

oh love this – the personification of sadness in the first stanza is stellar – really like the arc to the last lines – very nice – K
Thank you, Kathleen. Your support and encouragement is greatly appreciated. JW
Oh, this is the first time I’ve seen sadness painted this way — a destructive friend. Nice!

I have known this friend, Sadness, for years. Now another friend has written about it.
So well!
Thank-you for reblogging this one, Archie.
Very well written. I know this ‘friend’ too.
I imagine most of us do, Melanie. Thank-you.
Wonderful. I love this. You will create a more fierce monster who is dark like him, win at his game, leave you alone as you find your light. That’s where I continued this between the lines.
Thanks so much for commenting on this piece, Kat. Glad you enjoyed and continued on with it! ;`)
It’s central to writing poetry, in my mind – writing between the lines, writing without words. 🙂 We don’t always hear about what others read there. Great piece.
What the hell you don’t need a dog……Gav moved to Florida……

thank you so much for reblogging this poem – means a great deal to me
As they say, misery loves company … sometimes we dwell on commiserating and self-pity. A puppy would surely chase the blues away. Well written and great personification of sadness. 🙂
Thanks for visiting again Loredana and commenting on this piece.

A wonderful write many will connect to Loneliness Loss grief n such can be magnets to the strangers who call themselves friends The takers of the giving is such a hard punch when realisation of this hits you the sadness can often be like the weight of grief
