the stillness of the heat
motionless wind chimes hang from
shepherd’s hook
a goldfinch silently perched
drenched in the spell of the summer sun
it matters not the time of day
minutes lasting hours
perhaps drifting backwards
fading shadows exposing wilted petals
the stillness of the heat lingers
unnecessarily
perfectly fixed like a photograph
beads of sweat forming on every pore
june two thousand sixteen

I suddenly feel quite hot.
Nice imagery.
thank you for commenting on this one – it’s a bit cooler here this evening
Ahhh, cooler works for me. But your piece conjured up a sense of hot, sticky humid conditions that leaves me drained and pretty useless. Me no likey 😁
This poem is magnificent! I lived in desert for a while and your words so perfectly capture what that endless heat felt like. Your style remind me of my favorite favorite poets, Billy Collins. I am really flattered you take the time to read and comment on my poems, thank you!
Thank you for your kind comments, Parmis. I’m elated you like this poem. You are the second person who’s mentioned I remind them of Billy Collins, for which I am flattered. It’s my pleasure reading and sharing your work. Wishing you the best in all your literary endeavors.
I have not felt that kind of heat in a long time… but yes I do remember it when I lived in the Southwest.
I’m pretty sure I prefer extreme heat over cold but both are oppressive in their own way.
