Into the Earth

This poem was my first blog post on December 7, 2011.
It is now the last one on this site.
A very special thanks to everyone who visited my poetry over the years.

In my mind I draw a square
in the very center of the garden

From there I dig into the earth
using the seasoned spade
usually reserved for plantings

The hole slowly turns into a cube
as three mounds resemble
Egyptian resting places

Further down the soil
becomes hard and cold
the clay malleable enough
to mold eternal companions

Satisfied the opening
is mathematically sound
I hold the spade at my side
sweat falling off my forehead
silently instructing the child
to bring forth her loved one
to the newly built altar

    • Thanks for the kind sentiment, Michelle. All is fine, just a lot of changes in my life since retiring last year. I intend to start another project down the road after a much needed pause. Take good care.

      • I really do understand, and sometimes a break is the best thing for any of us. I’ll be looking forward to the next thing you do. Hugs… ~M

  12. 2011! Wow! The final act! Who knew the beginning would also become the end, or maybe you planned it that way. I truly hope you’ll keep writing. This feels both ceremonial and sacred. What a longstanding relationship you’ve had with WordPress and your readers. It reads like a farewell and an offering, carrying the quiet weight of someone tending to what’s dearest to the heart. A beautiful final post to honor everything that came before it. ♥️
