poetry by j matthew waters

good riddance

isolate and medicate
seems to be the order of the day

did you see what she said
telling him outright
he’s no longer wanted here
not after what he’s done

and so he put his tail
back where it probably belongs
keeping his tongue in cheek
and hitting the pavement
without any plan of action

it’s hard to say who he may
infect in the days that follow

second chances don’t always
keep presenting themselves
this much she knows
thankful that tomorrow
can rain as much as it wants

july two thousand twenty
