lost and unfound

the cat chased the crescent moon
deep into the night
encountering near death experiences
along the way
living and dying by the hour
until inevitably unseen

with the scent of the cat
fresh in the dog’s
sensory perceptions
he searched for days on end
until finally losing track of
his long-lost friend

promising to return another day
the dog headed back home
guided by a bright satellite
looming over the city
stray cats springing from the shadows
and jumping over the moon

I lost a day and found everything

time machine on four wheels
fueled by some kind of natural gas
yet to be mined or refined
sent me on backward courses
destined to make me believe
in new definitions

there is something to be found
where you least expect
especially when weaving in
and out of byways and highways
genuine or imaginary or
in the design phase

bracing for impact I wasn’t
sure if I was exiting or entering
my man-made machine
simple and complex and
able to travel everywhere
in a matter of seconds

through these walls

the seasons turned but I wasn’t ready for it
I was too busy looking back on the
opportunities I had squandered
brushed aside like slight inequities
rotting into things undone

I knew the snowblower in the garage
wouldn’t start so I put a blanket over it

I brought in the shovels from the shed

the snow may be the death of me I told myself
but I’ll be damned if I can’t still dig

I wasn’t ready to go back into the house
so I pulled out a beer from the fridge
and sat on the workbench
vague images of things undone coming
to mind and mixing with telephones
ringing through these walls

lost in space

you make me feel this big she said
eyes squinting
thumb and forefinger
an inch away from her nose

walking taller than usual
she exited the stage like someone
who knew exactly
where she was heading

as open minds followed
her every footstep
my mind traveled far inside
that imaginary space
she had just recited

how to put into words

blank card unfolds
with pencil in hand
as I sit in silence
waiting for the words

instead I draw
a little lost boy
in pursuit of his soul
in the cherished woods

a network of leaves forbids
the sun from shining
upon the moss-covered floor
as the sounds of the silent march
carry on

the young man calls
into the branches
certain someone above
understands his prayer

intervention

i should have put myself
in a position to save him
should have thrown differences aside
and made a case for rising
to the occasion

held back by clear skies
i kept to my routine
realizing he probably was right
this business of saving
is misunderstood

remedy

in a desperate attempt
to regain my focus
i found myself
walking the streets
of the city
for days on end
buying random thoughts
from ordinary people
in hopes of curing
the quiet desperation
of an idle mind

awakening

flatfooted on the edge
of a supersized
new york city highrise
i calmly stand tall
like an olympian diver
slowly rising to her toes
before falling into twisted
recollections of fetal positions
and outstretched arms
a trail of shuttering thumbnails
racing faster and faster
until forever buried
below the water’s wake

road trippin’

i had taken this road
so many times
in my german sportscar
from highway thirteen
to one fifty-one
just as the sun played
peekaboo with the rolling hills

memory and instinct
found me banking
the wide curves and picking up
speed into the straightways
my mind free
from the distractions
of yesterday’s troubles

slowing into the next
historic cottage
i spotted a freshly paved lane
heading towards the valley’s bluff
my machine fast
flying straight off the edge
into a waking paralysis
