New daydreams and old doodlings

In the darkroom I develop images buried
somewhere in the second grade

Missus Munster was into rhymes and repetition
and her students were good at following instructions

I particularly enjoyed an occasional spelling bee
clearly recall how one time
one of the girls couldn’t answer
instead simply cried as she peed down her leg

Funny thing is I don’t remember anybody laughing
only Missus Munster whisking her off her feet
and straight out the door

I just sit there with my number two pencil and paper
remaking the scene into a black & white photograph

memories stacked neatly
in locked up photographs
once prominently displayed
now distant and dustless
like oddly real dreams
never truly understood

do I dare open the box
and relive all the fears
hidden behind nervous smiles
below cloudless skies
never imagining the future
would ever come to this

another iowa winter

nobody knows what the weather
is like in iowa
just like they don’t know gigantic
potatoes only grow in idaho

in january it’s so damn cold here
the cows don’t move
so it’s easy to walk right up to them
and snap photograph after photograph

there are no metropolises in iowa
just little towns
with a post office and a tavern
where you can tie your horse to a post

in the winter the winds blows so cold
it leaves you shivering
until march when the sun penetrates
the earth and reality begins to blossom

Her photograph had faded
over the years
its corners bent
the once off-white border
discolored from finger-oil

Over time she slipped inside
a plastic sleeve
her visage turning softer
her smile faraway yet forgiving

To be sure no words matched
the strength of her photograph
her haunting thoughts
filling my dreams
