Repossessing the Kingdom of Edom

We invited the prophet for supper
because we were not afraid

The Father told us about Obadiah
about his warnings of destruction
as a consequence of action

Having become students of the living
and of the dead (and especially of those
capable or rising again) naturally we
were anxious in making a connection

Although we possessed many questions
the most obvious rallied around
his postmodern interpretation
to the Day of the Lord

trouble is coming

what’s the point in looking back
one day you believed in god
the next planting tulip bulbs
on a cold sunday morning

your daughter tells you
she talks to jesus
and you believe her like you
believed in the hanging man

there is whiskey on your breath
but it no longer has any effect
other than rewiring the circuits
inside your imagination network

trouble is always forthcoming
this much is self-evident
positioned cross-legged on the floor
you orate the next prophecy

there is nothing holy in hypocrisy

why have all the scholars
and scribes and high priests
why have they sealed up the
words of the prophecy
exposing their selfishness
and secrecy for all to see

I have scaled the city walls
and found a new world
where the seeds of truth
sprout from my cupped hands
and water flows like a fountain
deep within the desert

remake

there’s nothing new
going on around here
except for elvis and jesus
walking the streets again

everywhere around the globe
people are revolting
while special forces make sure
they’re in on the action

the price of oil fluctuates
like the unpredictable warming
giving rise to speculation
the end is already here
