finger exercising

when did modern life
become about scrolling

imagine if you will
finding yourself on a single scull
scrolling through the dead sea
like an ancient mariner

while quite possibly you’re
attempting this in real life
chances are your fingers
are the ones walking the talk

not that long ago
you used to get the big picture
by way of a single page
but now it’s all about
reconnecting a disconnected world
one flashpoint at a time

Kilohertz 301

A late summer night
small upstairs bedroom
green-eyed boy equipped
with flashlight
comic books
& transistor radio
hopping from one world
to the next
sublimely time traveling
by way of frequencies
of an alien kind

the dehumanizing effect

it was only a matter of time
when future
meets present
reinforcing the idea
that what’s seen nowadays
isn’t necessarily what you get

but what I don’t get
is how I became this blade runner
in my recurring dreams
chasing down one alter ego
after another
each one stamped with born-on
expiration dates

Summer of low expectations

I never expected
my battery powered lawn mower
to go up in flames
smoldering curbside
like a campfire just doused
with a pail of water

In retrospect I’m just happy
having my gas-powered honda
sitting safely in the garage

keeping in sync with boulder colorado

your life
is in the palm of your hand
sometimes you charge it
by day
other times by night
depending upon so many factors
some of which
are under your control
but mostly most of which
are certainly not

there will come a day
people will no longer
need to plug themselves in
but rather be recharged
by the bright yellow sun
constantly coming
in & out of their lives
like atomic clockwork

redundant by day and night

checking and rechecking for updates
going on twenty-four hours now
can’t seem to connect to the server
so I reboot and try again
reboot and try
again

in the background
memory reminds me lab work
is scheduled at eight a.m.
fasting time is twelve hours
but pints of ale in the fridge
keep calling my name
keep calling
my name

taking a break
I check my vital signs
blood pressure check
heart rate check
body fat better recheck
pop up window says
could lose a few pounds
lose a few pounds

this dog on my lap is dying
not enough room to be updated
not enough memory
not enough sleep
rustic technology rewiring my framework
keeping me up past midnight
rebooting and tipping tall boys
rebooting and tipping
tall boys

million dollar app

i’ve been working on this app idea
the kind you buy at the app store
and somehow magically appears
on your smartphone
which really isn’t just a phone
but a device
that attaches itself to your body
all day and all night
regulating your bodily functions
telling you when your glucose is low
and your blood pressure high
monitoring your communication activity
both on and offline
and offering to be your second best friend
even though your dog
already knows better

patent pending

we labored to perfect
the replication of a hollowed
muscle application
centrally located and rhythmically
circulating essential oils
throughout the entire framework
of contemporary tin men
