imagine

these neighborhoods
reside in underworld riddles
subjected to laws
systematically enforced
by remote controls

stepping on stones
children experience daring truths
along boundary lines
carving their world from another
looking from afar

latest weapons
brutally scratch hard surfaces
buckling the pavement
like tectonic plates exploding
and consuming homes

lord have mercy
mothers lament repeatedly
sprawled on city streets
grown children riddled with bullets
limp in barren arms

lifeless bodies
encircle living among dead
pleading up on high
beating breasts and shouting for world
to imagine peace

the treaty of good riddance

let go of the anger
leave it at the doorstep
ring the bell and run away

there is no room for it
anywhere or anymore

all it does is drag you down
leaving you
and everyone around you
exhausted

let go of the anger
and reach out to someone
in need
someone you’d never thought
would need help
or someone on the other side

let go of the anger
and instead practice humility
and patience
and gratitude
start proving to yourself
you can live without it
and be someone better
than you were the day before

think of the restraints anger
puts on your life
how it prolongs your depression
and reinforces your addictions
preventing you from ever truly
enjoying the benefits of positivity
hospitality and endless creativity

think about it
think about how losing your anger
would be the best thing the world
would ever know

food will taste better
the air will smell sweeter
and those streaks of light
racing through the sky
will be nothing but beautifully peaceful

new year revolution

we went underground with new people
the ones we always wanted
to hang with
but never configured coordinates
exactly right

smuggling firearms and ammunition
inside gift-wrapped packages
we took off
on one-way interstellar flights
prospecting peace

a new revolution bravely speaks
against centuries of hate
taking off
with old ideas in real-time practice
to change the world

a poem of possibilities

buried far beneath the earth
in the garden of good and evil
lies dormant the key
to man’s heart

the seedling had failed
to germinate
while the tree of knowledge flourished
thereby leaving man
selfishly singular

it’s been said treasure can be found
somewhere in the cradle of civilization
its hidden secrets
more powerful than the words
of all the enlightened masters
who left this world
dreaming of lasting peace

1984

nobody cares about nineteen
eighty-four anymore

nobody seems to remember
how lovely the wine tasted
nor how the hash under glass
made the world such a
beautiful place

there is no rewinding
there is only nineteen eighty-four
when the world mushroomed
and there were no more
children to be born

some say the final war
brought lasting peace
to this world

but nobody can be sure

dreaming for peace

in the dream
a dark cloud follows overhead
like a skeptical stray cat
neither threatening nor kind
unbiased and nearly lifeless

far beyond
stars form stellar pyramids
with eye-shaped apertures
blinking a visual morse code
only warlords understand

in the dream
martin luther king preaches
to a desperate generation
promising harmony and hope
where there is only despair

far beyond
star factories push the limits
within a universe pulling back
brushing aside dark clouds
and bringing change on earth

architecting a house of cards

I look at pictures of people
from all across the world
and I see the look in their eyes
and say to myself
they are just like me

and then I am reminded
of a good friend
I’ve not seen in ages
who once told me
how much he admired
the individuality of my mind

from there I imagine
collective thoughts make up
the universe as we know it
and without me pinging
this particular poem
the whole thing could implode

after the cities have fallen

I sometimes imagine
what the fall of america
will be like and wonder
what similarities its cities will share
with the likes of sparta and pompeii
delphi and olympia
tikal and memphis

I imagine the people will flee
from the cities and find
a much simpler life
free from the burden
of a bigoted government
learning to live a new way
peacefully within its own means

locked inside pandora’s box

I hunker down in a hawkish grotto
where nobody can find my prize
where the light of day
seems a light year away
and hound dogs
are just a figment of my imagination

there is plenty of food for thought
and sweet nectar can be tapped
from these ancient walls
measuring ten stories tall
adorned with objects
painted on throughout the centuries

exiled into this self-imposed solitude
I am at peace with my new mission
guarding the evils
locked inside this silo
hoping and praying
the world lives beyond its darkest days

the prince and the peacemaker

the children are being watched
by men with weapons
acting as protectors
from foreign forces

they volunteer as escorts
for the elders
protecting them from snipers
and negotiators with knives

it’s easy getting educated
at such a young age
quickly picking up maps
and languages
of many legions

as long as they refrain
from strapping on suicide packs
their prophesy of negotiating
lasting peace
will one day ring true

peace process

it’s too complicated
all these thoughts running
through the streets
without supervision
with blades strapped to ankles
and an arsenal of firearms
lining your inner pockets

forget the wars a half a world
away the one right here
is about to steal your freedom
unless you get off
your lazy ass and figure out
how to save yourself
before you’re blown away

the escort

you entered my life
in a most unexpected way
leaving me to dwell
on all things
naturally good
giving me a sliver of hope
for achieving peace
within
before i am escorted
out the door

fooled again

drums bang slowly into the night
keeping time with toy soldiers
marching through the streets
enforcing a curfew imposed
by the new boss promising
freedoms this world has yet to know

Where Freedom Flies

Prisoners walked the lily fields
in magnetic boots
picking up pieces of shrapnel
left from centuries of hatred

Misunderstandings on Earth
are as certain as battlefields
unnecessary as bleeding hearts
never truly loved

Children of all civilizations
were fed into the factory
placed in single file lines
and taught elastic freedoms

As the elders grew past death
they’d come to realize
peaceful starships could sail
beyond the sun and back
